How is abdominal liposuction performed?
Before the surgery, the cosmetic surgeon will mark areas of the body where fat will be removed. An intravenous (IV) line in your arm will be added to ensure that the level of fluid in your body remains within the healthy limits throughout the procedure. If a liposuction procedure does not require general anesthesia, a sedative may be given for relief.
During abdominal liposuction, the aesthetic surgeon performs a small incision on the skin, typically just below the belly or bikini line and places a thin tube in the fatty area called the cannula. The cannula is used to disintegrate fat deposits and shape the area at desired rates. Unwanted fat is extracted from the body with a strong vacuum, so as not to give the skin, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. In the liposuction process, a hollow stainless steel tube (cannula) is used with a strong vacuum to remove the fat. This is facilitated by first reducing the pain to the fat storage area and filling the bleeding with a solution that helps to reduce the bleed most. Usually, 2-3 millimeters of incision is performed in the liposuction procedure. Depending on the density of the fat, several incisions may be necessary under certain conditions.
In a super-wet liposuction technique, a salt solution containing the local anesthetic and adrenaline is injected into the area where the procedure is to be applied; which makes it easy to break up and remove the fat masses. This extra fluid also minimizes tissue trauma around the fat mass and reduces pain and swelling after surgery. Adrenalin application also reduces the risks by reducing bleeding during aesthetic surgery. The tumescent (swelling) technique in which a larger amount of liquid solution is injected has similar benefits.
