What is hair transplant?
Hair transplantation is a procedure based on the plantation of hair follicles from the donor area into the head bald areas by a dermatologist. The expert usually transfers hair roots from the back or side of the head with no hair loss to the forehead or top of the head, as needed. Hair transplantation is typically performed in a sterile manner under local medical conditions under local anesthesia.
It has been observed that the majority of hair transplant procedures performed at the Estrella Aesthetic Centre counselling are genetically based (genetic alopecia (baldness)). The remaining cases were determined to be related to various factors such as diet, stress, illness and medications.
Two types of transplant are performed; slit grafts and micro grafts. Slit grafts contain 4-10 hair follicles per graft. Micro grafts contain 1-2 hair follicles per graft, depending on the amount of planting required. In our centre’s consultancy, the principle of hair rooting is dominant at the maximum amount of hair planting operations.
Having your hair planted will increase your appearance and your confidence in yourself. The best candidates for hair cultivation are those who have the following qualifications:
- Male-pattern (due to testosterone loss) with baldness problem.
- Women with fine hair type.
- Anyone who has lost some hair due to burn or scalp injury.
Taking hair roots and planting them in another region is not a good option for the following types of candidates:
- Female candidates with large hair loss patterns throughout their scalp.
- Candidates who do not have the appropriate “donor” area for hair removal for transplantation.
- Candidates with keloid scarring (thick, fibrous scars) following injury or surgery.
- Candidates suffering from chemotherapy-induced hair loss.
What are the Reasons for Hair Loss?
There are many reasons for hair loss in the scalp and they are different in males and females. Surveys show that 100-150 hair loss per day is normal. Human hair naturally grows in three stages: Anagen, catagen and telogen. Anagen is the active or growing phase. Katagen is a fairly short period of natural hair circulation that hair begins to break. Telogen is the resting stage. Daily spilling hair is usually in the hair cycle, rest or late. Normally, about 10% of the hair is at rest or telogen stage. These hairs grow and are being prepared to spill periodically.
In general, most hair loss is not associated with systemic or internal diseases. Often, hair may be weakened due to pre-determined genetic factors (heredity) and general aging process. Many men and women begin with light and often normal physiological hair thinning, beginning with their thirties and forties. At other times, temporary severe stress, dietary changes and normal life differences, including hormonal changes such as pregnancy, puberty and menopause-andropause, can lead to preventable hair loss.
In particular, many health conditions, including thyroid disease and iron deficiency anaemia, can cause hair loss. If you are concerned about some basic health problems, it is useful to refer to family physician, internal medicine specialist or gynaecologist for basic health screening. Dermatologists are doctors specializing in skin, hair and nail problems and can provide further diagnosis and treatment of hair thinning and spillage. Occasionally, head skin biopsy is used to help diagnose severe or unexplained hair loss.
Drugs are not common causes of hair loss or thinning, even though there is a list of “hair loss” among the potential side effects of many medications. On the other hand, the use of immunosuppressive medications, including cancer treatments and chemotherapy, causes hair loss. Full hair loss usually occurs after major chemotherapy for cancer. In general, hair reappears within one (1) year.
FUE Hair Transplant Candidates
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique is a technique in which hair follicles, such as hair, eyebrows, and beards, are taken from the donor site of skin and planted in areas where hair is not seen. FUE has three techniques, needle, Choi, Slit. Which process will be applied is determined by the surgeon according to the characteristics hair lines of the patient.
At the Estrella Aesthetic Centre’s consultancy, we’re experts in hair replacement; we exclusively perform FUE transplants for our patients. This leading-edge method of hair transplantation is highly technical and the most effective way of getting maximum value out of every donor hair.
Advertisements made for hair plantation often because everyone to look like a perfect candidate for hair transplantation, but this does not always apply.
Younger patients (18-25) are generally not ideal candidates, because hair loss fact is probably going to continue in later ages. Having hair plantations at such early age can lead to a misdistribution of donor hair root in a limited amount; because the doctor cannot predict the exact severity of possible hair loss in the future.
There is a difference in hair loss appearance in men and women. In men, hair thinning is seen in local areas, while thinning in women is all over. Men are good candidates, except for those with common hair thinning. Although most women are not ideal candidates because they have hair loss in scattered regions, some women also have regional hair loss, which makes them good candidates.
The thicker your hair, the higher the density and the better the results you get from hair transplantation. Wavy hair, because it has more volume, gives a more intense appearance compared to flat hair.
Density is defined as the number of hairpins per unit surface area, and as expected, the higher the density, the more hair can be used for transplantation.
Asians typically have very flat hair and less follicular density than the Caucasians. Candidates of Asian origin should interview doctors with experience in Asian hair. Caucasian origins are people who have a wide variety of hair and skin types and get the best results, thick, dense hair and skin-like hair colouring. The less the contrasts between the two, the better the results are obtained.
More donor hair can be removed from loose hair and less scarring is also possible. Doctors check the scalp’s looseness before surgery, which shows how much of the donor hair can be removed.
Hair Transplantation and FUE Technique
Hair loss is a discomfort that is common in both men and women due to hormonal, genetic and aging. It causes lack of self-confidence in people, seriously reducing the quality of life.
In recent years, with the development of methods used in hair transplantation, satisfactory results have been obtained and the natural appearance of the person has been preserved. Although there are many different methods used in hair transplantation, FUE (Folicular Unite Extraction) technique is the most ideal hair transplantation method so far developed.
The FUE (Folicular Unite Extraction) technique is a method of hair transplantation based on the transfer of hair follicles, which are usually taken individually from the nape region, to non-hair regions. With this method, it can be transferred from any region of the body (such as the back, chest and leg) to the hairs taken.
Why the FUE is the most ideal Technique?
The reasons for the preference of FUE technique over other methods of hair transplantation can be summarized as follows;
- There are no marks on the areas where hair roots used in transfer are taken.
- Sewing is not performed because there is no incision in hair.
- Hair transplantation costs are lower than other techniques.
